Three years and six months after collapsing while training dogs in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavati died on Thursday night, June 11, 2026. The death of King Maha Vajiralongkorn's eldest daughter brought grief and reopened questions about a line of succession many had seen as settled, handing the future of the throne to a 21-year-old prince who has rarely appeared in public.

Three Years and Six Months of Waiting

Princess Bha, as Bajrakitiyabha was widely known, collapsed on December 14, 2022, from a heart condition during a session training her pet dogs in the Pak Chong district. She was rushed to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, and from December 15, 2022, she remained unconscious.

For more than three years, the Bureau of the Royal Household released little new medical information. By April 2026 her condition had turned critical. Doctors detected an abdominal infection caused by inflammation of the large intestine, which triggered low blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, and a blood-clotting disorder. At 7:48 p.m. local time on June 11, 2026, Princess Bha was pronounced dead at the age of 47.

"Her condition continued to deteriorate, and she passed away peacefully on June 11, 2026," the Bureau of the Royal Household said, as quoted by CBS News and Al Jazeera.

The Thai cabinet declared a 15-day period of national mourning beginning June 12, 2026. Flags were lowered to half-staff at government offices and schools, while civil servants and state-enterprise employees were urged to dress in black. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the public was still encouraged to carry on with economic activity as usual during the period.

From UN Corridors to a Women's Prison Cell

Bajrakitiyabha was a law graduate of Cornell University with two master's degrees and had served at Thailand's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. She was also ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014 and later worked as a prosecutor in Udon Thani Province.

She is best remembered for two contributions: the Kamlangjai ("Inspire") campaign for the rehabilitation of female inmates, and her role in pressing the UN General Assembly to draft and adopt the Bangkok Rules in 2010, an international set of guidelines aimed at improving the lives of women in detention.

"I think Her Royal Highness positioned herself very well among the people … She made people feel that the royal family could at least be of use to them," Kasidit Ananthanathorn, a lecturer at Ramkhamhaeng University, told Al Jazeera.

Prime Minister Anutin said "her commitment to building a society full of kindness, justice, and equality will forever stand as the nation's moral legacy, a guiding light for future generations of Thais."

Who Now Stands Before the Throne?

According to Al Jazeera, the presumptive heir to the throne is now Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, 21, Bajrakitiyabha's half-brother, who has yet to build a public record comparable to hers.

The context matters because constitutional changes in Thailand had at one point opened the possibility for Bajrakitiyabha to become the country's first female monarch. That path is now closed entirely. Her death comes amid deep-rooted pressure: a monarchy reform movement that since 2020 has pushed open debate over the palace's role and accountability, and a country still mourning the death of Queen Mother Sirikit in late 2025.

The palace has not issued a statement confirming or altering Prince Dipangkorn's official standing as heir. Details of the royal funeral, including whether the body will lie in state at the Grand Palace with full ceremony, are also still awaited.

Fifteen Days of Mourning and What It Means for Indonesia

Thailand is one of the busiest travel destinations for Indonesians. The 15-day mourning period means a more solemn public mood and the possibility of restrictions on some entertainment events, particularly those held at government facilities.

On the diplomatic front, Indonesia offered official condolences when Queen Mother Sirikit died in 2025, with President Prabowo Subianto conveying them at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Whether Prabowo or Indonesia's Foreign Ministry will issue a similar statement for Thailand's latest loss is likely to become clear in the coming days.
