IKN Spokesman Troy Pantouw Dies at 58 in Nusantara

Troy Harold Yohanes Pantouw, spokesman for Indonesia's Nusantara Capital Authority (Otorita IKN), died on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 58. He was found in his residence in Tower 6 of the ASN 3 civil-servant housing block in Nusantara Capital City, East Kalimantan, and taken to Hermina IKN Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Troy had served as special staff for public communications to the IKN Authority chief since January 2024, a role that made him the agency's public face to media.

News of his death was announced on the official Instagram accounts of the IKN Authority and of Authority chief Basuki Hadimuljono. Troy's body was flown to Jakarta to be handed over to his family, with arrival at the funeral home expected Sunday morning, July 26.

Conflicting accounts of the timeline

Two institutions have given different times for when the events occurred. Thomas Umbu Pati Tena Bolodadi, the IKN Authority's Deputy for Development Control, said Troy was taken to Hermina IKN Hospital around 12:45 p.m. WITA and pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m. WITA. "He was taken to the hospital around 12:45 p.m. WITA and examined immediately by the medical team. At 2:25 p.m. WITA, doctors confirmed he had died of natural causes," he said.

Senior Commissioner Supriyanto, chief of the Nusantara Capital City police, gave a different account of when the case first came to light. "That's right. It happened this afternoon, around 2:15 p.m. WITA. We received a report from one of his staff. We've also asked the Criminal Investigation Unit at Penajam Paser Utara Police to come to the scene and investigate," he said. Police then sent an identification team along with the Criminal Investigation and Inafis units from Penajam Paser Utara Police to the location.

The gap between the hospital arrival time and the police report is about an hour and a half, while the gap to the doctors' declared time of death is just ten minutes. The two accounts come from different stages of reporting: the police version was published first, at 5:59 p.m. WIB, while the cause of death was still awaiting autopsy results. The IKN Authority's account, which concluded natural causes, was published later, at 11:55 p.m. WIB.

Why do the two timelines differ?

The likely explanation is that each side was working from a different stage of information when it first spoke to media, not that the two accounts contradict each other. Police spoke based on the initial report from Troy's staff before the medical process was complete, while the IKN Authority gave its details after doctors had finished their examination. Neither side has released a single chronology laying out the exact sequence between the room check, the evacuation, and the hospital arrival.

An initial physical examination of Troy's body found no signs of violence or anything suspicious. His family said he had a history of hypertension and took medication daily, information that supports but does not replace the autopsy results as the official basis for police in determining the cause of death.

A career in public communication at IKN

Before joining the IKN Authority, Troy built a long career in media and corporate communications, starting as a broadcaster and reporter before moving into public relations. That background made him the main link between the IKN Authority, the media and the public during a period of intense national scrutiny over the new capital's construction, including the relocation of civil servants and the flow of investment into Nusantara Capital City.

The IKN Authority has not announced who will take over spokesperson duties during the transition. A unified chronology covering the sequence from the discovery of his body to the determination of the cause of death, along with the autopsy details cited by police, is still awaited from both institutions.
